A quick update and New Years’ wishes

I’ve been relaxing a bit this week, catching up on my reading piles, and preparing to launch my the newest feature of this blog: book reviews! I’ve been promising them for a while, and they will be appearing next week sometime.

If you’d like to see what I’m reading and reviewing, there will be a section in the sidebar on the right.

In other news, I’ve come up with yet another book idea (yes, this makes three) and just have to find the motivation and time to work on it. Hopefully, next year I’ll have a chance. :-) That sounds weird, doesn’t it?

There’s plenty of other things that I’m working on and everything will be posted here sooner rather than later. I have three restaurants to review for the Examiner, Indians history columns to write for Deep Left Field, and more blog posts on Crazy Mandy Talks Sports, once the Browns stop irritating me.

In the meantime, here a few cute kitten pictures to end the year with…

The kittens are 4 months old today! As you can see, Osiris and Horus are at that weird “teenage kitten” stage where their ears are too big for their heads and their heads are too small for their bodies.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Starting the new year with new tires

I received my Christmas present from my mother-in-law this past weekend. She asked me awhile ago what I needed, and I told her that I needed tires for my car, so that’s exactly what I got. Four Yokohama’s, an oil change, and a four-wheel alignment. Then it turned out that my right front tie-rod end was shot, along with the wheel bearings, so she paid for those repairs, too. Technically this counts as a gift for this Christmas, my birthday next year, and possibly next Christmas. :-)

Now, for my New Year’s Resolutions: I’m making them early this year. (Christmas Resolutions?) I’m not going to make the standard stop procrastinating/send more birthday cards/ see more movies  resolutions, because I’m already working on those. This years are more career-oriented, with the exception of the first one. So, here we go:

Resolution #1) To eat healthier. I’ve already started this one. I’ve cut back on the junk food (except for today when I had a candy bar for breakfast) and am drinking more water. Rather than the sugar-laden Vitamin Water that I adore, I tried HINT water. It has just a little bit of fruit juice, hence the name “HINT” and is quite tasty. The fruity taste shows up a bit more when it’s warm, and it has no calories or fake sugar, so that works for me. So far the mango-grapefruit is my favorite flavor. I’ve also tried the Wings of Nature Organic bars, since those are way more healthier than the granola bars that have chocolate chips in them. The cranberry crunch bar was my favorite of those. I usually don’t like cranberries unless they’re dried and coated in sugar, so I was pleasantly surprised. I also enjoyed the Almond Raisin Bar. All of the Wings of Nature bars are soft and low in both calories and sugar. They’re certified organic, and believe it or not, are made in Canada. (You all know how much I love Canada!)  I haven’t tried the Espresso Coffee Bar yet, so I’ll have to keep you posted on that one.

Resolution #2) To work on my book. I started it last month, as part of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), but am nowhere near completion. However, for non-fiction, all I need is a good book proposal to shop around to agents, so that is my goal for 2011: to get closer to having a book published. I’m not expecting lightning to strike, but if I can get the book finished and (hopefully) some sort of literary agent by the end of 2011, I will be happy.

Resolution #3) This one is more civic-duty minded. I’m planning on joining the Lorain County Civil Air Patrol sometime next year. Probably once the weather settles down. I’ve been told that they need help with their public relations, and that’s right up my alley. It’s an all-volunteer organization, and they need help. Also, I’ve already signed up to be a volunteer Watershed Steward for the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I’ll be going to local board and planning committee meetings to make sure that they don’t approve anything stupid that will mess up the local waterways. I’ve been complaining about what other people call “progress” for years, and now I’m going to be in a position to do something about it. I’ll probably be doing more for the CVNP once the weather gets warmer and their other programs kick in, too. (And I’m dragging Josh in to both of those. He gets to join me.)

So, with 9 days left in 2010, I’m already off on the right foot. What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

Fire alarms, pet carriers and traveling tips

Earlier this evening the fire alarm went off in my building. I stuck my head out into the hallway and didn’t smell smoke, but panicked anyway.

After dragging Josh out of bed, I started trying to round up my cats and get them into carriers – just in case. (If nothing else, I was going to save my cats, my computer, and my cell phone.)  I managed to get three of my fuzzies into carriers, but the rest hid under the couch.

It’s a good thing that it wound up not being a big deal, because I don’t even have enough cat carriers to get them all out. I have two small one-cat carriers and one larger one that will comfortably fit two or three, depending on the cats I put in it. That leaves at least two without a way out.

Thankfully, the big ladder firetruck pulled up; two people ran out to meet one of the firemen; he grabbed a fire extinguisher, and… that was it. All I know is that it wasn’t on my floor.

But now I need to buy some cat carriers, just in case.

These tips for traveling with your pets, courtesy of PetAlive.com can also fit the “in case of an emergency” situation I went through earlier. Pay close attention to the Relaxing Your Pet instructions. Apparently freaking out in the middle of the living room is not going to coax my cats out of hiding.

Helpful tips for traveling with your pet:

·         Consider your pet’s needs.  Distance, location, temperature, mode of travel, your pet’s health, age, etc. are all important factors to consider before traveling. Remember that your pet is very sensitive to change, and when stressed, the immune system is likely to become weakened, so be sure to boost immunity prior to travel.

·         Packing & preparation. Remember the essentials like medications and medical records, food and bowls, a pet first aid kit, bedding, carrier, tags, and toys.

·         Before any trip, make a quick stop at your vet to have your pet examined to make sure vaccinations are up to date, and to get any medications your pet might need, etc.

·         Relaxing your pet.  Anxiety and car sickness are two of the most common concerns amongst pet owners. For anxiety, take your pet on short trips regularly to help accustom him to traveling, and remember to bring a favorite toy or blanket. If traveling by car, make sure the vehicle is well-ventilated, and open a window if necessary.

Helpful tips for boarding your pet:

·         Make a reservation. Boarding facilities become hectic during the holiday season, so be sure to book in advance.

·         Find out what’s permitted. Certain toys may be dangerous for other animals and prohibited.

·         Leave favorite items at home. Keep in mind that boarding facilities deal with many pets and owners a day, meaning that your pet’s favorite item may end up in someone else’s hands.

·         Leave your emergency numbers. Always provide your personal contact info, and even the hotel or house you will be staying at just in case.

·         If your pet is on medication, verbally tell someone in the facility about medication needs and also leave instructions.

·         Bring the essentials. Include a list of feeding instructions for your pet along with an unopened bag of food. In some cases, there may be times when another animal eats out of your pet’s dish;  sending a fresh bag of food will ensure your pet has enough of his/her food to last while you are away.

Snowed in part two

This is a view from my apartment taken around noon today:

Not shown - the UPS man getting his truck stuck outside the building. You can barely see the other tower, and the clubhouse, off to the left and across the parking lot, isn’t visible at all. And it’s still snowing! So much for global warming.

I gave my cats a bowl of snow, just to see what they’d do with it. As you can tell, Horus and Osiris wrestled over who got to eat it first. Once they got over that first shock, “Oh, COLD!” they didn’t seem to notice. That whole bowl of snow vanished in about 5 minutes.

I haven’t left my apartment since yesterday morning. I think I’m losing my mind. Can’t you tell?

Snowed in

I used to love the snow when I was a kid. I remember putting on my giant purple snowsuit and boots and running out into the front yard to build defective-looking snowmen. I learned early on to never throw snowballs at my dad while he was shoveling, because he’d fling a shovelfull of snow at me. :-)

Unfortunately, the second I learned how to drive, I started hating the snow. The first month I had my license, I managed to get my car stuck in the street outside my parents house not once, but twice. When I was in college it wasn’t a big deal, mostly due to the fact that it didn’t really snow in Ashland. That and I lived in a dorm all four years and just walked everywhere.

Once I graduated and got a job, I really hated the snow. I had a hard enough time waking up enough to drive in the mornings, let alone drive defensively in a foot of wet, slushy, Lake Effect white stuff.

Now that I get to work from home, I look out the window at everyone trying to drive around in our unplowed parking lot and think, “HA HA! I don’t have to go out there!” It kinda makes my day.

Batty for board games

I have about 30 board games, including 6 Star Wars ones (Escape from the Death Star, Trivial Pursuit, 2 versions of Monopoly, and 2 versions of Risk), five *count ‘em* FIVE versions of Monopoly (the two aforementioned Star Wars ones, Cleveland, Harley Davidson, Catopoly, and the original), plus classics like Yahtzee, Life, Hotels, Battleship, Scrabble, and Axis and Allies.

Unfortunately, I don’t get to play too many of them. It’s hard to find the time, plus a certain person won’t play Scrabble with me because I always win. (BTW – he cheats at Battleship.) And then the cats take over, like in the picture above. Osiris spent a good 15 minutes attacking the dice, It was just so funny that I let her play with them.

The next thing you’re going to ask is, “How did I get so many board games?” Well, some I’ve had since I was a kid, some were gifts when I was in college, and others I bought on ebay. One of them is older than I am: Escape from the Death Star is from 1977.  I even rescued some games from the dumpster outside of my building. Before you say EW, let me clarify – they were on the ground outside the dumpster and were still in their original shrink wrap. I couldn’t let them go to the landfill. It just wasn’t right.

There are still a few on my wish-list, including a blank make-your-own Monopoly, and several Star Wars-themed games that I don’t yet have. I’d also like a complete Axis and Allies (the old mid-80′s version) since mine is missing some pieces. I think I need Mousetrap to complete the collection, too. None of the new-fangled ones though. The last time I wandered the game aisle at Wal-Mart I was dismayed to find that they all contain DVD’s now. Are attention spans that short? It’s sad that kids these days will never know how much fun it is to spend three hours losing at Monopoly.

Thoughts on the weather, writing and stuff

I feel cold just looking out my window. You have no idea how good it feels to know that I don’t have to go out there and freeze. It’s nice just sitting in my little apartment all warm with my bottle of Pepsi. (You were expecting coffee? Ew.)

In other news, I’ve been invited to become a contributing writer for FanSided’s Cleveland Indians Blog: Deep Left Field. Once I get my first post up, I’ll let you know.

Coming this week on the Cleveland Examiner, I’ll be reviewing Angelo’s Diner in Garfield Heights, and Tequila Pancho’s in Hudson. Links to those will be posted when I get them completed and posted. (It might even be today for the first one!)

I have a bunch of other stuff in the works, too, so keep checking back!
