Thrifty Tailgating Tips to Kick-Off Football Season on a Budget

Guest post by Andrea Woroch

Fire up the grill and get ready for kickoff; football season is here. What goes hand-in-hand with football season? Tailgating of course. Fans everywhere are honing secret recipes and stocking up on supplies to make their party dominate the parking lot. It’s important, however, to be mindful of spending, as the festivity’s cost can quickly add up, from team memorabilia to beer and food.

Before you put the finishing touches on your tailgate plans, try out a few of these thrifty tips.

1. Team Up
The atmosphere at a major tailgate party is all about community, but don’t be fooled; there are plenty of freeloaders floating around. Avoid overspending by getting some friends in on the action. Assign a couple of people to drinks, several to snacks, and you take care of the grill and meat. Consider it a sports-centric potluck that cuts costs for everyone. Need some culinary inspiration? Tailgating.com has dozens of free, fan-submitted recipes perfect for game day.

2. Carpool
With fuel prices at an all-time high, it’s wise to carpool so you can split the costs of gas and parking. Depending on how often your posse goes to games, devise a schedule and assign driving duties fairly. Otherwise, search for ride share opportunities at sites like CarpoolConnect or CarpoolWorld.com. You can also post a ride and charge a small fee to cover gas and mileage for each seat.

3. Fan Gear for Less
The signs of a high-quality tailgate include a team flag flying high and jerseys as far as the eye can see. Even if you don’t have a jersey, there’s no excuse for not wearing team colors. If it seems like these items are too expensive, you can always use coupons to get free shipping at such stores as Finish Line from sites like FreeShipping.org.

4. Smart Food Choices
Pre-made salads, sandwich platters and cubed meats may be easy choices, but they’re also much more expensive, with mark-ups reaching nearly 100 percent. You can save a lot on food by preparing your own before leaving home. Buy larger slabs of meat from the butcher and cut them up yourself. Depending on the number of people participating in the tailgate, consider buying some food items like cheese, chips, condiments and hot dogs in bulk from stores like Costoco for savings up to 30 percent.

5. Get Your Game On
There are only so many things to do in a parking lot, so it’s key to include a few simple games in your plans, like a football to toss around. Lawn games like Corn Hole and Washers are also entertaining choices and can be found at reasonable prices among major retail chains like Sports Authority or Sears. For those with a crafty hand, consider building a board game from scratch for a fraction of the cost. You can get building tips at CornHoleHowTo.com. Otherwise, download the free NFL Football Trivia App on your smartphone to test the football knowledge of your tailgate buddies.

6. Borrow Before Buying
Tailgating requires a lot of supplies, from oversized coolers and pop-up canopies to folding tables and chairs. Before heading to the store to buy whatever gear you’re lacking, find out if you can borrow from friends, neighbors or coworkers. Otherwise, scope out used goods on Craigslist or try trading items at Swap.com.

7. Bring the Tailgate Home
There’s nothing like attending the game among other screaming fans, but when budgets are tight it’s time to bring the tailgate home. You’ll save on gas, parking and game tickets. Don’t forget, sometimes it’s just more fun to watch a big game at home, anyway; You get the benefit of multiple hi-def replay angles and a comfy couch seat while you avoid fighting traffic of a crowded parking lot after a long day of tailgating.

2010: A year in review

Here are my top ten events for 2010:

  1. I went fully freelance with my writing and am now officially using my expensive college degree.
  2. I successfully completed November’s National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) challenge.
  3. My cat had kittens!
  4. I finally got new tires on my car.
  5. I upgraded my cell phone (twice) and finally settled on a Droid X.
  6. I also upgraded my digital camera.
  7. Ohio got hit with its first blizzard of the season, and I didn’t have to drive in it!
  8. The FAA N34 crew flew into town because my dad made an RC model of the big plane, and I was able to spend the entire weekend with them at the Cleveland Air Show.
  9. I actually became a football fan.
  10. I interviewed Michael Symon, Cleveland’s Iron Chef.

And there’s more greatness in store for 2011!

Dear Cleveland Browns…

Season after season I have sat idly on the couch trying to read while my husband screams at the tv. He gets pissed off when you do something stupid and extremely happy when everything goes right and you manage to win a game.

This season, I’ve actually started watching the games. And joining in the yelling (sometimes.) I’m starting to like football. Now I want my team – you, the Cleveland Browns - to win just as badly as everyone else does.

I threatened today that if you lost this game against the Panthers that I would “black out” the rest of the season and refuse to let my husband watch any of your games. You wouldn’t get any ratings from my living room.

Thankfully (for him) you won, albeit barely.

So I’m writing this letter to ask: how can you be so awesome against the Saints and the Patriots (and the Jets, although you lost), yet so sucky against a crappy team like the Carolina Panthers? How could you have let the Jaguars beat you? They aren’t having a good season either.

Your next three weeks should be a cakewalk. Please don’t make me hate football again.

My new blog is up and running. Click here to go to:

On my new blog (don’t be alarmed, this one will by no means be abandoned) I’m going to share my opinions on local sports: Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cav’s, Cleveland Indians, Akron Aero’s, and… whatever the hockey team is called now, oh wait, the Lake Erie Monsters. Don’t expect play by play or game descriptions. This is going to feature my opinions on things only.

Random updates and things of that nature

I know I promised some sort of organizational tip today, but I’m in the middle of a very busy (crazy!) week and haven’t really had a chance to think about it. So that might be delayed until next week.

But I do have some updates and announcements and things pertaining to my writing world. I’m starting a new blog pertaining to sports. It’s going to focus more on my opinions and less on actual play-by-play. After all, everyone knows that I have plenty of opinions! I’m not sure what to call it yet, since the best title that I came up with is already taken. Maybe “Crazy Mandy Talks Sports?” I don’t know. Any suggestions?

I have a million other ideas and projects in the works, and a bunch of reviews to post on my Cleveland Restaurants Examiner site. Basically, just a TON of things and huge to-do list.

I’m sorry this post is so boring, but I just feel the need to blab about all of my deadlines to relieve some of the stress!

Posts coming soon to this blog:

  • How I slowly became a football fan
  • Tomorrow awesome beef stew (food post!)
  • What I want for Christmas (but won’t get)
  • My thoughts on eBooks VS real books
  • A history of video games – my personal perspective

Things coming soon to the Examiner:

  • Review of Angelo’s Diner
  • Review of Tequila Pancho’s
  • Review of Five Guys Burgers and Fries (first in a series of burger joints)
  • Info on next week’s Winterfest on Public Square

Now, I need a break. I’ve been on my computer for five hours straight!
